Customer Analysis

The value of knowing your customer.

Most retailers have more customer data than they realize and less usable insight than they need. We turn what you already collect into a clear picture of who is buying, where they are and when they decide, then put the budget behind it.

Case Study

The Value of Knowing Your Customer

On my first day of mechanical engineering school in 2011, a professor gave us a piece of advice I have spent my career validating:

The biggest waste of engineering time is misunderstanding the customer's needs.

Retail isn't engineering, but the principle holds. You can't deliver value until you understand who your customer is and what they actually need.

A client of Link Data operates a multi-location ski rental and retail business. They had healthy revenue but limited data infrastructure, and no reliable way to answer a basic question: where do our customers come from, and when do they show up? We built a custom Snowflake pipeline connecting their separate lines of business into a single story, with the tables and dashboards to make it usable.

The patterns showed up immediately: who was coming, where they came from, which mountains they chose, and when they booked. Then we spent the media budget accordingly.

Knowing when the customer plans

Spring break destination trends surfaced both new growth markets and the regions that return year after year. We pushed media support into those booking windows and into select regions instead of spreading it nationally. One month of learnings was enough to move spend to a measurably more efficient rate.

Knowing where the customer goes

The data also showed that certain states consistently prefer certain mountain destinations, down to top repeat customers and top volume by location. We built location-specific creative for those states, meeting the customer during the planning process with a message that already matched the trip they had in mind.

The infrastructure didn't create new customers. It just showed us where the customers already were, and the spend followed.

What We Do

A clear picture of who is actually buying

We work with the customer, transaction and marketing data you already have, and turn it into something your team can act on this quarter.

Customer Segmentation

Segment by real purchase behavior: category affinity, basket size, frequency, recency and lifetime value, instead of the demographic guesses your email tool defaults to.

Geography & Demand Patterns

Volume broken out by customer location, destination and store, down to top repeat customers and top volume by location, so regional demand stops being a guess.

Purchase & Booking Windows

When each segment plans and buys, so media support lands during the decision window instead of after the decision has been made.

Then What

The analysis is only worth what you do with it

Audience Activation

Every segment we define gets pushed into the tools your marketing team already uses, so an insight becomes a live audience rather than a slide.

Campaign Strategy

A prioritized plan of what to run, who to run it at and what to measure, sequenced by expected impact rather than by whatever is easiest to build.

Trend & Retention Analysis

Spot which segments are growing, which are quietly churning, and which first purchases predict a long-term customer. Then build the retention plays around them.

What changes when you know who is actually buying

Before

  • National targeting spread evenly across every market
  • Campaigns aimed at everyone on the email list
  • No view of which regions prefer which products or destinations
  • Creative written for everyone, relevant to no one
  • Budget shifts based on instinct and last year's plan

After

  • Spend concentrated where the data says demand is growing
  • Audiences built from purchase behavior and value
  • Preference mapped market by market
  • Creative matched to what that customer is actually planning
  • Budget shifts based on buying windows you can see
